Difference Between Eyelet and Grommet

To understand the distinction between eyelets and grommets, it's essential to first define each term clearly. A grommet is a ring or edge strip inserted into a hole through thin material, typically a sheet of textile fabric. Grommets are generally flared or collared on each side to keep them in place, and are often made of metal, plastic, or rubber. They may be used to prevent tearing or abrasion of the pierced materials or protect from abrasion of the insulation on the wire, cable, line being routed through the penetration, and to cover sharp edges of the piercing, or all of the above.
And a small grommet may also be called an eyelet, used for example on shoes, tarps and sails for lacing purposes.

Basic Structure of Eyelet and Grommet

types of grommet

  1. Single-Piece Structure:
    • Description: Many eyelets are single-piece components without a washer. These eyelets are typically used for lighter materials and applications that do not require additional reinforcement.
    • Applications: eyelets are commonly used in shoelace holes, garment decorations, and other areas where the stress on the material is minimal.
  2. Two-Piece Structure:
    • Description: Some grommets consist of two pieces: an outer ring and an inner washer. These two-piece eyelets are used in applications where additional reinforcement is needed to prevent the material from tearing or wearing out, providing a more secure fixation.
      • Eyelet: eyelet provides a reinforced hole in fabric or other materials, allowing for lacing, threading, or attachment points.
      • Ring (Washer): Placed on the opposite side of the material from the eyelet to distribute the pressure and prevent the material from tearing or fraying around the hole.
    • Applications: Used in areas that experience more stress and require added durability, such as heavy-duty fabrics, outdoor equipment, and industrial applications.
